In solids (solid bodies), the particles of matter are close together. In the solid state, the kinetic energy of the particles of matter is much smaller than the potential energy of the attractive forces acting between the particles. The peculiarity of solids is revealed by deformation: only solids resist deformation. The common property of liquids and solids is the conservation of volume, which is why they are called condensates.
