With this scheme, it is possible to turn two lamps on and off from a single switch. In this case, however, the voltage of the power source must be as high as the sum of the nominal DC voltages of the lamps. If one lamp breaks, the other also goes out. A similar series connection is used in many inexpensive Christmas lights.
